Baharul Alam has officially taken over as the new Inspector General of Police (IGP), replacing Md Mainul Islam.
The handover ceremony took place on Thursday at the police headquarters in Dhaka, where Baharul was welcomed with a guard of honour by police officers.
Baharul was appointed by the interim government on November 20 and will serve a two-year term on a contract.
He brings years of experience to the role, having joined the Bangladesh Police as an Assistant Superintendent of Police in 1986, after passing the Bangladesh Civil Service (BCS) exam.
Throughout his career, Baharul has held several important positions, including heading the Special Branch (SB) and serving as Additional IGP at police headquarters.
He also has a strong international background, having worked in peacekeeping and advisory roles. Between 2009 and 2013, he was a Senior Police Liaison Officer at the United Nations Headquarters in New York.
He also worked as a Senior Police Adviser for the UN mission in Afghanistan in 2015 and participated in peacekeeping missions in places like Croatia, Serbia, Kosovo, and Sierra Leone.
Although Baharul retired from active service in 2020, his appointment as IGP marks his return to leading the police force and continuing his work in national law enforcement.
