In the wake of the government`s fall and the subsequent political shift, the trend of renaming roads and establishments continues in Dhaka.
The capital’s Bangabandhu Avenue has been renamed as ‘Shaheed Abrar Fahad Avenue.’
Along with Bangabandhu Avenue, various roads, buildings, and establishments under the jurisdiction of Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) have also been renamed.
Many of these roads and buildings were previously named after individuals associated with the Sheikh family and the Awami League.
In a circular issued on Tuesday, the DSCC announced the new names for these roads, buildings, and establishments, as reported by Bdnews24.com.
Mohammad Russel Rahman, the Public Relations Officer of DSCC, said,
"The naming committee proposed the changes, which were then approved in a board meeting. Following that, the proposal was sent to the Local Government Division for final approval. Once approved by the Local Government Division, the renaming was finalized."
Bangabandhu Avenue, located in Dhaka’s Gulistan area, houses the central office of the Awami League.
On August 5 last year, the Awami League’s central office was attacked amid the anti-government uprising, with the party president’s office being set on fire.
Abrar Fahad, a student of Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET), was brutally murdered five and a half years ago.
The South City Corporation has now renamed the road in his honor as ‘Shaheed Abrar Fahad Avenue.’
Other roads, parks, bridges, and establishments that have been renamed include:
- Bir Muktijoddha Sheikh Fazlul Haque Moni Avenue has been renamed to its original name, Inner Ring Road.
- Bir Muktijoddha Lieutenant Sheikh Jamal Avenue has been renamed to its former name, Jhauchar Main Road.
- Bir Muktijoddha Advocate Md. Kamrul Islam Avenue has been renamed back to Kamrangirchar Loharpul-Buriganga Road.
- Shaheed Sheikh Russel Shishu Park in Kalabagan has been renamed back to its original name, Kalabagan Shishu Park.
- Shaheed Sheikh Russel Shishu Park in Jatrabari has been renamed back to its former name, Jatrabari Shishu Park.
- Mayor Sheikh Taposh Bridge has been renamed back to Kamrangirchar Bridge.
- Mayor Mohammad Saeed Khokon Social Event Center has been renamed back to Gendaria Social Event Center.
- Mayor Mohammad Saeed Khokon Park has been renamed back to Sarafatganj Park.
- A recommendation was made to rename Bir Muktijoddha Advocate Md. Kamrul Islam Social Event Center back to its original name, Kamrangirchar Social Event Center.
- Mayor Hanif Auditorium has been renamed to Nagar Bhaban Auditorium.
- Mayor Hanif Flyover has been renamed to Gulistan-Jatrabari Flyover.
- Mayor Hanif Jame Mosque has been renamed to Azimpur Graveyard Jame Mosque.
- Mayor Hanif Mosque has been renamed to Sayedabad Bus Terminal Jame Mosque.
- Bangabandhu Avenue has been renamed to Shaheed Abrar Fahad Avenue.
