Bangladesh has appealed for immediate international measures to facilitate the return of Rohingyas, saying it can no longer bear the burden of hosting 1.3 million refugees.

The UN General Assembly’s Third Committee adopted by consensus a resolution on Rohingya Muslims, calling for renewed global efforts to find a durable solution to the crisis and ensure the safe return of Rohingyas to Myanmar.

Jointly tabled by the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) and the European Union (EU), the resolution was cosponsored by 105 countries. Since 2017, this yearly resolution has highlighted ongoing human rights violations in Myanmar’s Rakhine State, targeted attacks on Rohingya Muslims, restrictions on humanitarian access, and the continued influx of Rohingyas into Bangladesh and neighboring countries.

The resolution also called for sustained international engagement to ensure the safe and sustainable return of Rohingyas to Myanmar, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said on Thursday.

After the resolution’s adoption on November 19, the Bangladesh delegation expressed gratitude to member states for their support, but voiced disappointment over the lack of tangible progress in the past eight years toward facilitating the repatriation of Rohingyas to their homeland.
