The National Review Committee, which is looking into power generation deals in Bangladesh, has asked the Interim Government to hire a well-known international law firm to help with its work.
The committee wants the firm to assist in reviewing major power contracts signed between 2009 and 2024, during the rule of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.
The committee, led by Justice Moyeenul Islam Chowdhury, said it needs more time to look over a number of contracts, both those that were formally requested and those that were not.
In a special resolution, the committee explained that it is gathering evidence that could lead to renegotiating or even canceling some of these contracts, following international arbitration rules.
"To help with this, we recommend hiring one or more top international legal and investigative firms to support our review," the committee stated in its resolution.
The committee made it clear that it wants to ensure its investigations are done properly and meet international standards, making them acceptable for future negotiations or legal processes.
Currently, the committee is focusing on several major power projects, including:
- Adani (Godda) BIFPCL 1234.4 MW coal-fired power plant
- Payra 1320 MW coal power plant
- Meghnaghat 335 MW dual fuel power plant
- Ashuganj 195 MW gas-fired power plant
- Bashkhali 612 MW coal power plant
- Meghnaghat 583 MW dual fuel power plant
- Meghnaghat 584 MW gas/RLNG power plant
