Human Rights Culture Foundation (MSF) has expressed strong condemnation and concern over the brutal killing of a journalist who was chased and stabbed with a weapon in public in Gazipur.
The organization stated that such incidents are not only undesirable but also directly undermine honest journalism, obstruct objective reporting, and strike at the independence of the media.
MSF called the attack a dire warning for freedom of expression and the establishment of democracy.
In a statement issued on Saturday, MSF detailed the attack on Asaduzzaman Tuhin, a staff reporter of the daily Protidin, who was chased by five to six assailants armed with sharp weapons on Thursday night near Chandana Chourasta in Gazipur city.
Tuhin sought refuge in a tea shop at Eidgaon market, but the attackers entered and repeatedly stabbed him. He died at the scene before the assailants fled.
MSF emphasized that the killing of a journalist for filming a video of a youth being beaten and chased with local weapons is a chilling example of the threats to freedom of speech and democracy.
The interim government has expressed commitment to ensuring impartial journalism and media freedom, as well as protecting the safety and dignity of all citizens, including journalists.
The statement urged that creating a safe environment for journalists must be a priority for every government. MSF demanded a thorough investigation and justice for Tuhin’s murder.
