Sheikh Hasina’s fall did not change governance system: Left alliance

Leaders of the Anti-Fascist Left Alliance, comprising seven leftist parties, have said that despite the fall of Sheikh Hasina in the July mass uprising, the country’s governance system remains unchanged.

Criticizing the appointment of Dr Muhammad Yunus as head of the interim government, they claimed that despite having no connection to the 2024 mass uprising, he was placed in power due to the influence of bourgeois forces and US imperialism.

They made these remarks on Saturday at a discussion meeting titled "Expectations and Achievements of the July Mass Uprising" at the Shafiqul Kabir Auditorium of the Dhaka Reporters Unity in Segunbagicha, Dhaka.

The meeting was chaired by the alliance’s coordinator and Gana Mukti Union coordinator Nasir Uddin Ahmad Nasu, and moderated by Mahbub faction BSD central member Mohiuddin Chowdhury Liton.

Speakers at the event alleged that the interim government has failed to meet the people’s expectations from the mass movement and is instead setting a trap to cling to power for the long term.

They said one in every four citizens is living in extreme poverty, while commercial deals in agriculture and industry are destroying the local economy.

The government has failed to curb syndicate businesses, bribery and corruption, extortion, violence against women and children, and militant extremism.

The Left Alliance leaders also accused the interim government of taking decisions that could draw the country into imperialist conflicts, citing the leasing of Chattogram Port’s terminal to a foreign company, granting a humanitarian corridor in Rakhine, and allowing the establishment of foreign military equipment factories—moves they believe threaten Bangladesh’s independence and sovereignty.

Communist Party of Bangladesh General Secretary Ruhin Hossain Prince said, “Disillusionment has set in before the blood of the July uprising has even dried. There can be no liberation without a change in the governance system.”

Acting National People’s Front secretary Rajat Huda said the dream of an egalitarian society envisioned during the uprising has not been realized.

Calling for unity among all leftist parties, the alliance leaders urged continued struggle against anti-people systems to establish a democratic, egalitarian, and equality-based society.

The meeting was also attended by Bazlur Rashid Firoz, general secretary of the BSD; Masud Rana, coordinator of the Marxist BSD; Masud Khan, convener of the National Democratic Platform; Sunayan Chakma, organizer of the United People’s Democratic Front; Moshrefa Mishu, general secretary of the Democratic Revolutionary Party; Shubhrangshu Chakraborty, convener of the Communist Movement of Bangladesh; Dhaka University Emeritus Professor Sirajul Islam Chowdhury; Mofizur Rahman Laltu, general secretary of the Biborton Cultural Center; Abdul Ali, acting president of the Socialist Party of Bangladesh; and others.
