According to the "World Happiness Report 2025," Bangladesh ranks 134th out of 147 countries in terms of happiness.

This is a slight drop from last year, when it held the 129th position among 143 countries.

The report, published on Thursday, March 20, shows that Bangladesh is one of the countries where people are less satisfied with their lives, with only 13 nations having populations that are more unhappy.

The happiest country in the world once again is Finland, maintaining its top spot.

On the other end of the spectrum, Afghanistan has been labeled the unhappiest country in the world.

Other countries that follow Afghanistan in the list of unhappiest nations include Sierra Leone, Malawi, Zimbabwe, Botswana, the Democratic Republic of Congo, and Yemen.

In the South Asian region, India, Pakistan, Myanmar, and Sri Lanka hold the 118th, 109th, 126th, and 133rd positions, respectively.

Nepal, on the other hand, fares a little better, securing the 92nd position.

The report also highlights the top 20 happiest countries, which include Finland, Denmark, Iceland, Sweden, the Netherlands, Costa Rica, Norway, Israel, Luxembourg, Mexico, Australia, New Zealand, Switzerland, Belgium, Lithuania, Austria, Canada, Slovenia, and the Czech Republic.

The World Happiness Report is based on data collected by the Gallup World Poll, which surveyed over 140 countries.

The survey asks participants to assess how their lives have been over the past three years (2022-2024 for this report).

This year‍‍`s findings were compiled by Gallup, the Oxford Wellbeing Research Centre, the United Nations Sustainable Development Solutions Network (SDSN), and an editorial board.

To determine a country’s rank in terms of happiness, the survey looked at six key indicators: per capita GDP, social support, healthy life expectancy, freedom to make life choices, generosity, and perceptions of corruption.

Despite the challenges Bangladesh faces, it remains an important part of the global conversation on happiness and well-being, with efforts needed to improve the overall quality of life for its people.
