A Bangladeshi man has been seriously injured in a landmine explosion inside Myanmar near the border in Naikhongchhari upazila of Bandarban on Saturday.
"The explosion happened near Jumchhari border area inside Myanmar around 3:00pm," Naikhongchhari Upazila Nirbahi Officer Romen Sharma told the media.
The injured, Golam Akbar, 25, son of Syed Azim, of Naikhongchhari Sadar union, is now undergoing treatment at Cox's Bazar Sadar Hospital, the UNO said.
It could not be confirmed why he crossed the border as officials gave conflicting information.
Naikhongchhari police, however, said Akbar crossed the border to bring stolen cows.
Quoting locals, Romen said some 3-4 locals entered Myanmar territory by-passing pillar number 45 to collect woods in the afternoon. Golam was injured seriously when a land mine exploded.
Later, his associates rescued him and took him to Naikhongchhari Upazila Health Complex. He was later shifted to Cox's Bazar Sadar Hospital, Romen said.
Quoting doctors, Ripon Chowdhury, a police personnel posted at Cox's Bazar Sadar Hospital, said, Golam's left ankle was blown away in the blast. He also suffered serious injuries on various parts of the body, Ripon added.
