A Bangladeshi fisherman, Md. Almgir Sheikh, who had been detained by the Indian Border Security Force (BSF) on the Indian side of the Chapainawabganj border, has been returned to Bangladesh.
The handover took place through a flag meeting between the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) and BSF at the Wahidpur border in Shibganj upazila on Tuesday.
The event was confirmed by Lieutenant Colonel Md. Monir-Uz-Zaman, the commanding officer of BGB’s 53rd Battalion.
Md. Almgir Sheikh, a resident of Ramnathpur in Shibganj upazila, was fishing in the Padma River when he accidentally crossed into Indian territory on Monday night.
According to Lieutenant Colonel Md. Monir-Uz-Zaman,
“Around 8:15 PM on Monday, Almgir was fishing near the 7/9-S pillar area of the Raghunathpur border. He unknowingly crossed over into India and was caught by BSF personnel from the Nimtita camp, located 700 yards inside India. After discussing the matter with the BSF commander, we arranged for him to be returned.”
Following the flag meeting at the Wahidpur border on Tuesday at 11 AM, the BSF returned Md. Almgir to the BGB, along with his fishing net and boat.
Lt. Colonel Monir-Uz-Zaman further stated, "After the flag meeting, BSF handed over Almgir to us, and his fishing equipment was also returned."
The BGB handed Md. Almgir over to the local police after a case was filed against him for illegal border crossing by Shibganj Police Station.
