Shafiqul Alam, the Press Secretary to Bangladesh`s Chief Advisor, has strongly criticized Indian media for spreading false information about the murder of lawyer Saiful Islam Alif in Chattogram.
While giving an interview to Independent Television, Alam stated that those responsible for the crime would be caught and brought to justice.
He also spoke about the relationship between India and Bangladesh, saying that Bangladesh wants to have friendly ties with India, but it should be based on fairness, where both countries` interests are respected.
The incident took place on November 26, when violence erupted at the Chattogram court during the transfer of Chinmoy Krishna Das, a spokesperson for a Hindu nationalist group, after his arrest in a treason case.
The violence led to the murder of lawyer Alif. Some lawyers in Bangladesh blamed supporters of ISKCON, a religious group, for the murder.
However, Indian media quickly linked the event to communal violence, which created tension between the two countries.
Alam rejected these claims, calling them a form of propaganda. He said the Indian media was twisting the facts and creating unnecessary drama.
“We have already collected footage of the crime, and the killers will be found. Some people have already been arrested. But despite this, political parties in Bangladesh have stayed calm, and there has been no unrest. The main focus is on finding the murderers and making sure they are held accountable,” he added.
Regarding India-Bangladesh relations, Alam emphasized that Bangladesh wants to maintain good relations with India, but it must be on equal terms where both countries` needs and rights are respected. He criticized Indian journalists for not coming to Bangladesh to see the situation firsthand, instead spreading false claims about communal violence.
“Indian media is not interested in seeing the truth. They are more focused on pushing their own agenda by spreading false information about Bangladesh,” he said.
Alam also noted that in the past, Bangladesh’s interests were often overlooked in favor of India’s, but that would no longer be the case.
He said Bangladesh’s government is focused on ensuring that the country`s interests are protected.
On a more positive note, Alam mentioned that the government had set up several commissions to address various issues and that their reports would be ready by December 31.
After that, the government will talk to political parties and other groups to ensure the elections are fair and smooth.
The Indian media`s handling of the Alif murder has raised serious concerns.
Instead of reporting the facts, many outlets quickly jumped to conclusions and painted the incident as a religiously motivated attack without proper evidence.
This kind of reporting does not help the situation but only adds fuel to the fire, making things worse between communities and nations.
Furthermore, the Indian media`s failure to report on the ground, or try to understand the full picture, shows a lack of responsibility.
By focusing on spreading rumors instead of verifying the facts, they have damaged the trust people place in the media.
In today`s world, it is more important than ever for the media to stick to the truth and not spread misinformation for the sake of sensationalism.
