Chief Adviser Dr. Muhammad Yunus is embarking on a significant visit to China today, with the primary focus on attracting Chinese investment to Bangladesh.
According to Press Secretary Shafiqul Alam, who addressed the media during a press briefing at the Foreign Service Academy on Tuesday, this visit is expected to strengthen economic ties between the two nations.
During the visit, Yunus is set to hold a bilateral meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping on March 28.
This meeting will be a key part of the trip, with the objective of encouraging further Chinese investment in Bangladesh.
Press Secretary Alam also indicated that Yunus could meet with leaders from other nations at the Boao Forum, providing an opportunity for broader diplomatic engagement.
The visit comes at a time when Bangladesh is keen to balance its relationships with both China and India.
Foreign Secretary Md. Jashim Uddin, in a separate press briefing at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, emphasized that Bangladesh values its ties with both nations. He noted that economic cooperation with Delhi is also on Dhaka’s agenda.
The possibility of military cooperation between Bangladesh and China may also be on the table during this visit.
Foreign Secretary Jashim Uddin hinted that discussions surrounding military collaboration could take place, although no specific details were provided.
The visit is seen as a strategic move to strengthen Bangladesh`s position in the region.
Additionally, the Foreign Secretary mentioned that Bangladesh is still awaiting confirmation from Delhi regarding a potential meeting between Yunus and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on the sidelines of the upcoming BIMSTEC summit in Thailand.
This high-profile visit reflects Bangladesh`s efforts to solidify international partnerships while focusing on its economic and defense goals.
