Tension turned into a heated confrontation between students of Dhaka City College and Ideal College near the Science Laboratory intersection in the capital on Sunday, February 9.
What began as a quiet standoff in the morning escalated into chases and clashes by the afternoon, resulting in a chaotic situation.
According to eyewitnesses, students from both institutions had been in a standoff since the early hours of the day, though the exact cause behind the tension has not yet been revealed.
As the day progressed, the situation grew more intense, with students on both sides engaging in brick-throwing and chasing each other.
The conflict reached its peak after 4 PM, leading to a full-on clash.
At around 5:40 PM, bricks were still being hurled near Dhaka City College`s main gate. Some individuals were reportedly trying to break down the gate in the heat of the moment.
Earlier, at approximately 5:30 PM, a group of Dhaka City College students armed with sticks were seen gathering near their college.
Suddenly, students from Ideal College launched an attack, forcing the Dhaka City College students to retreat and lock themselves inside their campus.
When approached for comment, Zisanul Haque, Additional Deputy Commissioner of Dhaka Metropolitan Police`s (DMP) Ramna Division, acknowledged the ongoing tension between the two student groups.
He stated, "The police are trying to bring the situation under control."
The authorities are closely monitoring the situation to prevent further escalation.
No reports of serious injuries have surfaced yet, but the tension continues to loom over the area, with both sides seemingly unyielding in their stances.
The clash between students from these two prestigious colleges has raised questions about what might have triggered such hostility.
Student unrest is not uncommon in Bangladesh, particularly during moments of heightened academic or political tension.
This incident seems to reflect deeper frustrations that students might be grappling with, though the specifics remain unclear at this point.
Authorities will need to step in with timely intervention to prevent the situation from spiraling further.
