As the Bengali month of Poush continues, temperatures in two districts have already dropped below 10 degrees Celsius.
The cold wave has started in Srimangal, Moulvibazar, and Tetulia, Panchagarh. Meanwhile, other parts of the country are experiencing mild winter weather.
On Tuesday, December 24, there was some light drizzling in coastal areas, along with patches of sunshine and fog.
The Meteorological Department has forecasted that for the rest of this month, there is little chance of a cold wave in most parts of the country, except for one or two places.
Mild winter conditions are expected to continue in most regions, including the capital, Dhaka.
However, as the new year begins, a cold wave is likely to affect the entire country.
The month of January could see cold waves hitting different areas at different times.
The Meteorological Department also mentioned that temperatures in the southern parts of the country could rise by 1 to 2 degrees Celsius on Wednesday, December 25.
However, in Barisal, Khulna, and Chittagong, temperatures might drop slightly, causing colder weather.
For the rest of the country, temperatures are expected to remain steady, though the skies in coastal regions might stay a bit cloudy.
On Tuesday, Meteorologist Bazlur Rashid told the media that some clouds are moving inland from the sea.
This is limiting the amount of cold wind reaching the country.
While there is no widespread risk of a cold wave for the rest of this month, a few places may still experience cold wave conditions.
According to the Department’s observations, most parts of the country saw a slight increase of 1 to 2 degrees Celsius in minimum temperatures on Tuesday.
However, Srimangal’s temperature dropped to 8.9 degrees Celsius, and Tetulia’s to 9.4 degrees Celsius. The capital recorded a minimum temperature of 15.1 degrees Celsius.
The Meteorological Department also warned that fog could start appearing in various regions from today.
Light to moderate fog may be seen, especially in riverbank areas, from evening until early morning.
Experts have raised concerns that an increase in fog often leads to a decline in air quality.
According to global air quality monitoring agency AirVisual, the air quality in the capital remained “unhealthy” for most of the day yesterday.
