Door-to-Door data collection begins for voter list update

Source: Collected

The Election Commission (EC) has kicked off this year’s drive to update the voter list, aiming to make it more accurate and free from mistakes.

To make the process smooth and avoid causing any trouble to people, data collectors have been given proper training.

Starting today, Monday, officials will begin collecting information from households across the country.

Each year, data is collected door-to-door to include new voters, update the list with people who were left out for various reasons, and remove the names of those who have passed away.

This time, the list will cover all those who were born on or before January 1, 2008.

Officials say that the first phase of data collection will continue from January 20 to February 3.

After that, voters‍‍` biometric data will be recorded at local centers from February 5 to April 11.

During this period, people will also be able to apply to transfer their voter registration area at the Upazila Election Office, from February 12 to April 16.

At the same time, the names of deceased voters will be removed. All of the information will be uploaded to the server by May 5.

Speaking about the update process, Md. Yunus Ali, Regional Election Officer for Dhaka, said,

"We are proceeding with the data collection as planned. The team has been trained and instructed to follow the rules."

Across the country, 55,016 data collectors will work under the supervision of 11,801 supervisors.

Currently, the draft voter list includes a total of 123,683,512 registered voters. The Election Commission expects around 1.9 million new voters to be added this year.

The Election Commission has been provided with some essential tools by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) to help with the data collection process, including 175 laptops, 200 scanners, and 4,300 bags.

ASM Humayun Kabir, Director General of the National Identity Registration Division, mentioned,

"We are working to motivate the trainers. We’ve explained the importance of the NID card and how difficult it can be for people if there are mistakes."

The voter list update is a routine process that happens every year from January 2 to March 2.

A draft list is published on January 2 using data from the previous year.

After addressing any claims or objections, the final list is released on March 2.

The Election Commission can make changes to the list at any time, except during election periods.
