Interim government Chief Adviser Professor Dr. Muhammad Yunus has said that the sacrifices made by thousands of martyrs during last year’s July uprising have created a historic opportunity to reform the state and build a just, equitable, and corruption-free Bangladesh.
In a statement issued on Monday to mark July Uprising Day, Yunus stated, “The month of July has reignited our collective hope—hope for a Bangladesh founded on justice and equality, free from discrimination and corruption. The opportunity to reshape the state, earned through the ultimate sacrifice of so many, must be safeguarded at all costs.”
Dr. Yunus warned that forces loyal to the fallen autocracy remain active. “The defeated dictator and his vested interest groups are still conspiring to destabilize the country,” he said, urging unity beyond party lines to resist such threats. “Let us work together to build a Bangladesh where there is no room for dictatorship.”
Recalling the events of last year, Yunus described July 4 as “an unforgettable day in the history of Bangladesh”, when the people’s uprising reached its climax and the country was freed from years of fascist rule.
“To all those who took part in the movement—from workers and day laborers to professionals and brave youth—I offer my heartfelt gratitude on this historic day,” he said.
The Chief Adviser paid tribute to those who lost their lives confronting authoritarian forces and remembered the wounded, the permanently disabled, and those who lost their sight during the uprising with deep respect.
He reiterated that the July Uprising was a mass explosion against 16 years of tyrannical rule, driven by the goal of establishing a new political order based on equality, democracy, and freedom from corruption and autocracy.
Yunus said the interim government has launched wide-ranging reforms across all branches of state machinery to achieve these objectives and return power to the people.
He also noted that trials related to the July massacre are progressing swiftly, while initiatives are underway to honor the memory of the martyrs and rehabilitate the injured freedom fighters of the movement.
Political dialogue is ongoing with parties and stakeholders to ensure necessary reforms in the political and electoral systems, he added.
Reaffirming the commitment of the interim government, Dr. Yunus said, “We are determined to hand back all state powers to the people through a peaceful, free, and fair election, alongside a sustainable political solution.”
