Today marks the first anniversary of the July People’s Uprising, which led to the resignation of then-Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, who later took refuge in India.
In the aftermath, an interim government was formed with a mandate to introduce key reforms, including the announcement of the historic "July Declaration" and a future "National Charter of July."
As per prior announcements, the July Declaration will be formally presented today.
Chief Adviser of the interim government, Professor Muhammad Yunus, will read out the July Declaration at 5 PM this afternoon at the South Plaza of the National Parliament.
The program will be broadcast live on Bangladesh Television (BTV), confirmed the Chief Adviser’s press wing.
The July Declaration is a foundational document reflecting the ideals of the 2024 popular uprising. It was finalized with input from various political parties, including the BNP.
Sources say political groups have reached consensus on granting the declaration constitutional and state recognition. The National Citizen’s Party (NCP) had long demanded this declaration and held several movements in its favor.
26 Points in Draft Declaration
According to sources, the draft version of the declaration includes 26 key points. The first 21 points trace the history of Bangladesh’s democratic and liberation struggles, including the context and causes behind the July uprising. The declaration is being seen as a new milestone in Bangladesh`s journey toward democracy.
Cultural Observances on Uprising Anniversary
To commemorate the July uprising, the Ministry of Cultural Affairs has organized a day-long cultural program on Manik Mia Avenue, titled "36th July Celebration."
The event began at 11 AM with performances by various musical groups. At 2:25 PM, a symbolic reenactment titled "The Moment of the Tyrant’s Flight" will be staged, followed by live music by popular bands.
At 5 PM, the July Declaration will be broadcast live from the Parliament. In the evening, from 7:30 PM to 8:00 PM, a special drone drama will be performed, followed by a closing concert by the popular rock band Artcell.
The event is being organized by the Ministry of Cultural Affairs in collaboration with Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy and with support from the Parliament Secretariat.
Political and Family Representatives to Attend
A source from the Ministry of Culture said that representatives from various political parties, family members of those martyred in the uprising, and injured protestors have been invited to the declaration ceremony.
Cultural Adviser Mostofa Sarwar Farooki told Prothom Alo on Monday night that the Chief Adviser will read the declaration in the presence of families of martyrs, political and social leaders, and representatives of civil society.
He added that the event will then shift to the main stage on Manik Mia Avenue, ending with the drone drama performance.
“July belonged to everyone,” said Farooki. “This celebration will reflect that collective spirit.”
