In a much-hyped ruling, Khandaker Enamul Basir, suspended director of Anti-Corruption Commission, and Mizanur Rahman, suspended Deputy Inspector General of Police, were sentenced to eight and three years in jail respectively over bribery.
In presence of the duo in a packed courtroom, Judge Shaikh Nazmul Alam of the Special Judge's Court-4 of Dhaka on Wednesday pronounced the verdict in the Tk40 lakh bribery case filed against them, reports The Daily Star.
Basir was sentenced to three years for taking Tk 40 lakh as bribe from Mizan and five years for laundering the amount. However, both terms will start concurrently, the judge said.
He was also fined Tk 80 lakh, in default of which he will have to serve six months more in jail.
Mizan was convicted for giving the amount as bribe, the court said, adding, the time that Mizan and Basir have already spent in jail will be deducted from their sentence.
In the judgment, the judge said the prosecution managed to prove the charges of taking and giving Tk 40 lakh as bribe against the accused undoubtedly and they were given the punishment for committing such offences.
