Government forms 11-member media commission

The government has established an 11-member commission to bring reforms to the media sector, with experienced journalist Kamal Ahmed appointed as its head. A gazette notification regarding this was issued by the Cabinet Division on Sunday.

The commission will include the following members:  
- Professor Dr. Gitiara Nasreen, from the Department of Mass Communication & Journalism at Dhaka University  
- Shamsul Huq Zahid, Editor of The Financial Express  
- Akhter Hossain Khan, Secretary of the Newspaper Owners Association of Bangladesh (NOAB)  
- A representative from the Association of Television Owners  
- Syed Abdal Ahmed, former Secretary of the Jatiya Press Club  
- Fahim Ahmed, CEO of Jamuna Television and trustee of the Broadcast Journalism Centre  
- Jimi Amir, journalist and convener of the Media Support Network  
- Mustafa Sabuj, Bogura correspondent for The Daily Star
- Titu Dutta Gupta, Deputy Editor of The Business Standard
- Abdullah Al Mamun, a student

The commission will begin its work soon. It will consult with all relevant stakeholders before submitting its final report to Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus within 90 days.

According to the notification, the commission members will receive salaries, benefits, and status, which will be determined by the government. However, if any member chooses to work without receiving these benefits, they must first get approval from the Chief Adviser.

This move is part of the government‍‍`s plan to form multiple reform commissions. On October 17, the government also announced the creation of new commissions focused on health, workers‍‍` rights, and women‍‍`s affairs.
