Govt bans Awami League

The interim government has imposed a ban on all activities of the Awami League, both online and offline, under the Anti-Terrorism Act, effective until the International Crimes Tribunal (ICT) concludes its trial proceedings against the party and its leadership.

Law, Justice, and Parliamentary Affairs Adviser Prof. Asif Nazrul made the announcement during a press briefing following an emergency session of the advisory council held tonight.

He stated, “The decision was made to uphold national security, ensure the safety of July movement activists, and protect plaintiffs and witnesses involved in the tribunal process.”

The council also approved an amendment to the International Crimes Tribunal Act of 1973. According to Nazrul, the updated law now empowers the tribunal to take punitive action against political parties, their affiliated bodies, and supporting groups.

In addition, the advisory council resolved to finalise and release the July Declaration within the next 30 working days.
