Government employees have announced plans to hold another protest rally at the Secretariat on Thursday (June 19) if the Government Service (Amendment) Ordinance, 2025 is not withdrawn.
Nurul Islam, Co-Chairman of the Bangladesh Secretariat Employees’ Unity Forum, made the announcement during a sit-in demonstration on Wednesday.
Speaking at the demonstration held in front of Building No. 6 at the Secretariat premises, Nurul Islam emphasized that the movement would continue until the ordinance is fully repealed.
On the same day, the employees also submitted a memorandum to the Social Welfare Advisor.
"We have already completed preparations for conferences in all eight divisions. The senior government officials have broken our trust in the name of dialogue. We demand a 50% dearness allowance, and the bureaucrats aligned with the fascist government must be removed," Nurul Islam stated.
He further added, "We are government employees who believe in discipline. If the ordinance is not canceled, we will announce larger protest programs starting Sunday (June 22)."
Earlier, Mohammad Badiul Kabir, President of the Secretariat Officers and Employees Coordinating Council, had also declared that the protest would continue until the ordinance is revoked.
The protest began on May 24 after the draft ordinance was approved by the Advisory Council on May 22. Despite the protests, the government formally issued the ordinance on May 25.
According to the ordinance, employees can now be dismissed without formal departmental proceedings for four types of disciplinary offenses, following only a show-cause notice.
Government employees have labeled the ordinance as repressive and a ‘black law.’ In response, they have organized work stoppages, sit-ins, and protest marches demanding its cancellation.
