The High Court issued an order on Monday to the government listing all of Bangladesh`s Geographical Indication (GI) items that have received official recognition or for which an application has been made.
The court ordered the authorities to submit the list by March 19. At the same time, the court issued a ruling questioning why the authorities` failure to create and register a list of GI goods was not regarded illegal.
The Commerce Secretary, Agriculture Secretary, Culture Secretary, and other authorized officials have been given four weeks to respond to this rule.
After hearing a writ petition, a High Court bench of Justice Muhammad Khurshid Alam Sarkar and Justice Sardar Md Rashed Jahangir passed the order.
Barrister Sarowat Siraj Shukla of Tangail, who filed the petition, appeared in court for the writ.
On Sunday, she filed a public interest litigation in the High Court, seeking directions to compile a thorough inventory of all GI products in Bangladesh.
The controversy started when India claimed ownership of the centuries-old Tangail saree, acknowledging it as a GI product originating in West Bengal. This act provoked much discussion and condemnation.
In response to the crisis, Bangladesh`s Ministry of Industries certified Tangail saree as a GI product on February 8.
