The court sentenced five people, including expelled Awami League leader Helena Jahangir, to two years in prison in a case filed at the capital's Pallabi police station on charges of fraud and extortion.
Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Tofazzal Hossain's court announced the verdict on Monday. Earlier, on March 14, after presenting the arguments of the prosecutor and the defendant, the court fixed the date of pronouncement of verdict.
The other 4 accused who were sentenced to jail are - General Manager of Helena Jahangir's IPTV Jayayatra Television- Hajera Khatun, Television Coordinator Sanaullah Noori, Chief News Editor Kamruzzaman Arif and Staff Reporter Mahfuzur Rahman.
Meanwhile, as Helena Jahangir and Hajera Khatun were not present at the time of the verdict, the court issued an arrest warrant against them as fugitives.
