Injured workers, relatives of the deceased, and labour rights activists paid tribute to the victims of the Rana Plaza tragedy on Friday, while renewing demands for justice, compensation, and proper treatment for survivors.

Marking the 13th anniversary of the country’s worst industrial disaster, they gathered at the temporary memorial site on the land where the ill-fated building once stood in Savar in the morning, where they placed wreaths and offered prayers.

Before paying their respects, members of the Bangladesh Garments and Industrial Workers Federation staged a protest march, demanding exemplary punishment for those responsible for the collapse. They also called for adequate compensation and comprehensive medical treatment for survivors.

Labour leaders expressed frustration over delays in ensuring justice and compensation. Khairul Mamun Mintu, Legal Affairs Secretary of the Bangladesh Garment and Sweater Workers Trade Union Centre, said that many injured workers are still struggling to afford medical care. He demanded compensation for victims in line with the International Labour Organization (ILO) Convention 121.

Aurobindu Bepari Bindu, President of the Revolutionary Garments Workers Federation, said that despite 13 years having passed, legal proceedings against those responsible have not yet reached a conclusion. He urged the current government to fulfil the long-standing legitimate demands of garment workers.

A wide range of labour groups, including the Garment Workers Trade Union Centre, Garment Workers‍‍` Rights Movement, and the National Workers Unity Centre, joined the memorial programme alongside grieving family members.

The Rana Plaza building collapsed on April 24, 2013, near the Savar bus stand, killing 1,138 people and injuring thousands more.
