Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has proposed forming a 10-member parliamentary committee with equal representation from the ruling and opposition parties to work on resolving the country’s ongoing energy crisis.

The proposal was placed in the Jatiya Sangsad on Thursday, with Speaker Hafiz Uddin Ahmad presiding.

The prime minister said the committee would include five members from each side and be headed by Energy Minister Iqbal Hassan Mahmood.

He also announced the names of four additional members from the treasury bench and invited the opposition to nominate their representatives.

Rahman said the committee would serve as a platform to bring forward proposals from the opposition, adding that practical suggestions would be considered for implementation.

He noted that the energy crisis is a global challenge but emphasised the need for cooperation in addressing its local impact.

Leader of the Opposition Shafiqur Rahman welcomed the initiative, saying his party would soon submit its nominees.

He expressed hope that Parliament could play a central role in resolving national issues through dialogue and cooperation.
