The government has decided to restart gas supply to the Ashuganj fertiliser factory from May 1, prioritising agricultural production even if it affects electricity generation.
Energy Minister Iqbal Hassan Mahmood announced the move in Parliament, saying the decision was taken considering the importance of fertiliser supply for farming.
He acknowledged that diverting gas to the plant could impact power generation but said agriculture had been given priority.
The announcement came during a discussion on a motion raised by independent lawmaker Rumeen Farhana, who highlighted gas supply issues in her constituency.
She said residents in Brahmanbaria face severe shortages despite gas being produced in the district, with low pressure disrupting daily cooking and other household needs.
The lawmaker also raised concerns over illegal connections and alleged lack of monitoring, saying the situation has forced many households to rely on alternative fuels such as LPG and electric cookers.
In response, the minister said gas pressure has declined due to supply constraints but assured that efforts are underway to improve the situation through increased exploration.
He added that strengthening domestic exploration activities could help stabilise supply and improve pressure in affected areas.
