Iran claims ships now paying tolls in Hormuz

Iran has begun collecting tolls from vessels passing through the Strait of Hormuz, with initial revenues already deposited into the country’s central bank, a senior lawmaker said.

Parliament deputy speaker Hamidreza Haji Babaei said the funds had been received, though no details were given on the collection process or which ships made payments.

The claim could not be independently verified.

Earlier, Tehran had indicated plans to restrict access to the strategic waterway and consider imposing charges on ships, but had not confirmed whether such measures were in effect.

Another Iranian lawmaker, Alireza Salimi, said fees vary depending on cargo type and associated risks.

The Strait of Hormuz is a key global shipping route, and any move to impose tolls has drawn international attention.

US President Donald Trump had earlier warned vessels against making payments to Iran for passage through the strait.

The development comes amid ongoing tensions in the region following recent conflicts and ceasefire negotiations.
