The July Declaration embodies the vision and aspirations of the July Uprising, said Mohammad Mahfuz Alam, Adviser to the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting.
He described the declaration as a documented expression of the people’s collective desire for change.
Speaking at the Central Shaheed Minar in Dhaka on Saturday (August 2), following the July Reawakening Rally, the adviser said the declaration may be finalized and signed by August 5—or even earlier.
Regarding the upcoming “July Charter,” Mahfuz Alam noted that it is being drafted based on the opinions and input of various political parties, with hopes of signing it in the coming days.
He elaborated on the ministry`s activities to preserve the memory of the July Uprising, stating that the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting is making every effort to ensure that the events remain in public consciousness. Fifteen agencies under the ministry are working to document the uprising, archive evidence, and produce documentaries.
Bangladesh Betar and BTV are currently airing programs and documentaries focused on the events of the uprising. The Press Information Department (PID) and the Press Institute of Bangladesh (PIB) are conducting research-based initiatives. The Department of Films and Publications (DFP) has already produced several documentaries, while the Bangladesh Film Archive has launched a dedicated project to preserve historical records related to the movement.
Additionally, the Bangladesh Journalists Welfare Trust has provided financial assistance to the families of journalists who were killed or injured during the uprising.
Reflecting on the events, Mahfuz Alam noted that people from all walks of life—regardless of political affiliation—joined the July Uprising.
He emphasized the role of professionals, especially teachers, social workers, and cultural activists, who took to the streets during the final phase of the movement.
Describing the Central Shaheed Minar as a symbol of protest and victory, he said, “We began the uprising from here, and we were able to celebrate victory here as well.”
He added, “As long as we remember the martyrs of the uprising and feel the pain of the injured, we remain committed to building a new Bangladesh.”
On the interim government’s progress, the adviser said, “Over the past year, the government has made many promises, and a significant portion of those promises are now on the path to implementation.”
Recalling the sacrifices of those who lost their lives in the movement, he said, “Their martyrdom gave us a renewed sense of freedom and the opportunity to rebuild the country.” He urged everyone involved to remain focused on national development.
The rally and subsequent gathering at the Shaheed Minar were attended by Mahbuba Farzana, Secretary of the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, along with ministry officials, staff from affiliated agencies, and members of the press.
Earlier in the day, to mark the anniversary of the July Uprising, the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting organized a vibrant rally that began at the premises of Osmani Memorial Auditorium and concluded at the Central Shaheed Minar.
