The Election Commission (EC) has officially revealed the country’s updated voter list, which now includes a total of 12,37,32,274 voters.
The announcement was made today during the inauguration ceremony of National Voter Day, an event celebrated with grandeur across the country.
Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) A M M Nasir Uddin, while speaking at the event, emphasized the EC’s commitment to ensuring a fair, transparent, and credible election process.
"The Election Commission has pledged to the nation to ensure a free, fair, and credible election. We believe the people of the country have unwavering support for the EC. We have promised the nation to deliver a free, fair, and credible election," he stated.
He also mentioned the EC’s initiative to update the voter list, which began in January through door-to-door visits, with data entry still in progress.
The inauguration of National Voter Day 2025 was officially declared by the Chief Election Commissioner, followed by a colorful rally from the Election Building. National Voter Day is being celebrated today for the seventh time, under the theme, "In our Bangladesh, let’s vote together."
Various programs have been organized by the Election Commission Secretariat and election offices nationwide to mark the occasion.
The day aims to raise awareness about voting rights, a tradition that began on March 2, 2018.
Since then, National Voter Day has been observed each year, with rallies and discussion sessions held at the central, district, and sub-district levels.
A report signed by S M Asaduzzaman, Director General of the Election Institute and Chairperson of the National Voter Day Committee, confirmed that rallies and discussions have been planned across different levels to spread awareness about the importance of voting.
In April 2018, the government of Bangladesh had initially designated March 1 as National Voter Day during a cabinet meeting.
The decision was made to foster greater awareness about democracy, elections, and voting rights. However, starting from 2029, the date was shifted to March 2 for annual observance.
The EC Secretariat confirmed that all preparations had been completed ahead of the celebration, both centrally and at the local level.
This year, festivities are taking place in various regions of the country, including the EC Secretariat in Dhaka, district offices, sub-districts, police stations, and regional election offices.
In Dhaka, the Chief Election Commissioner inaugurated the event in front of the Election Building at 9:00 AM, in the presence of other election commissioners.
A vibrant rally followed the official opening ceremony. Later, at 11:00 AM, a discussion on the importance of Voter Day took place at the Election Building’s auditorium, with the CEC attending as the chief guest.
The EC’s official press release mentioned that the discussion would feature ten coordinators from the Anti-Discrimination Movement, representatives from the European Union, the UNDP, and several members from civil society organizations acting as observers.
Additionally, to commemorate the occasion, special publications were released in national newspapers, while talk shows discussing the significance of National Voter Day were aired on Bangladesh Television and Bangladesh Betar (Radio).
Similar activities, including rallies and discussions, took place at district and sub-district levels, as reported by Md. Ashadul Haque, Assistant Director of Public Relations at the EC Secretariat.
The celebration of National Voter Day continues to play a crucial role in promoting voter awareness and participation, as the nation prepares for upcoming elections under the supervision of the Election Commission.
