Movement of inbound buses 'stalled' in Rangpur

The movement of inbound buses to Rangpur virtually was suspended on Thursday evening, hours before a transport strike there.

Only buses from Rangpur Bus Terminal were repprtedly leaving the city, with transport workers saying the number of inbound buses was lesser compared to other days since Thursday morning.

It was reduced drastically by the afternoon, witnesses told an English daily.

Mentionable, the bus strike starts at 6:00am on Friday, a day before a mass rally of BNP.

The party's leaders alleged that the transport owners stopped operating inbound buses early as BNP men from different districts started gathering in Rangpur early to take part in Saturday's rally.

Ahsan Habib Dulul, organising secretary of Rangpur Division unit BNP, said the transport workers started their strike early as BNP men from different districts started coming to the rally venue since Wednesday evening.

It was clear that Awami League would enforce a transport strike in Rangpur in a bid to foil the public gathering at BNP's rally, he said.

The transport owners in Rangpur have enforced a 36-hour strike in the district demanding a ban on plying three-wheelers on the highway, just two days before the rally.
