After the demise of Junaid Babunagari on Thursday afternoon (August 19), Hefazat-e-Islam chose senior leader Muhibullah Babunagari as the platform’s new Ameer (chief).
Although it is still not clear whether he is the platform's new Ameer or Acting Ameer.
The decision to choose a new Ameer was taken on the same day Junaid Babunagari died.
Hefazat Organising Secretary Mir Idris Nadvi told the media that leaders of the platform took the decision during the meeting held at Hathazari Baro Madrasa yesterday.
Hathazari Baro Madrasa is in Chattogram.
On June 7, Muhibullah was announced the chief advisor of Hefazat convening committee.
He is also the director of Babunagar Madrasa, one of the oldest Jamiah Madrasas in the country established in 1924 at Fatikchhari in Chattogram.

Until the fall of the four-party alliance led by BNP, Muhibullah served as the senior vice chairman of Islami Okiyo Jote (IOJ).
Hefazat-e-Islam Ameer Junaid Babunogori died in Chattogram on Thursday (August 19). He died while receiving treatment at hospital in the port city at around 12:45 PM.
After losing consciousness due to high blood pressure, Babunogori was admitted to CSCR hospital. There he died while receiving treatment.
The 73-year-old Hefazat-e-Islam leader was suffering from old-age complications, and other comorbidities such high blood pressure, diabetes and kidney complications since a long time.
