NBR officials, organized under the NBR Reform Unity Council, have launched a five-day protest demanding the immediate removal of the NBR chairman and the repeal of a new ordinance that dissolves the NBR and Internal Resources Division.
The ordinance proposes splitting these into two divisions—one for tax policy and another for revenue collection—headed by administration cadre officials, which the protesting revenue officers say marginalizes their cadre.
The officials resumed demonstrations after talks with government advisers failed to yield results. They have declared a non-cooperation program with the chairman, will submit a memorandum to the chief adviser, and plan sit-ins at NBR offices nationwide.
Exports and international passenger services will not be affected. The council has also threatened complete work stoppages in all tax, customs, and VAT offices (excluding Customs Houses and Land Customs Stations) starting May 24 and total work stoppage from May 26.
Their demands include repealing the restructuring ordinance, public disclosure of a state advisory report on NBR reforms, and inclusive, consultative reforms for the revenue administration.
