All operations of the National Board of Revenue (NBR) have been halted as the work abstention resumed since Sunday morning at its headquarters in Agargaon in protest against the recent ordinance dissolving the NBR.
Most customs and tax officials and employees have gathered at the premises, effectively halting regular operations. Main entry gates are closed, limiting access to the building.
The protest is being led under the banner of the NBR Reform Unity Council, which has been demonstrating since the ordinance was issued on May 12.
The ordinance replaced the NBR and the Internal Resources Division with two new departments: Revenue Policy and Revenue Administration.
Protesters are demanding four key actions: immediate withdrawal of the ordinance, removal of the current NBR chairman, public disclosure of the recommendations made by the Revenue Reform Advisory Committee, and a transparent and inclusive reform process involving stakeholders including business communities and civil society.
Full-scale work stoppage is scheduled to continue throughout Sunday and Monday, excluding essential customs services related to exports and international passenger movement.
