Banks in Bangladesh are now allowed to charge a maximum of Tk 300 for passport endorsement services.
No additional fees beyond this amount may be collected from customers under any circumstance.
On Sunday, 18 May, the Bangladesh Bank officially set this limit.
According to a circular issued by the central bank, some scheduled banks have been charging varying rates for passport endorsement, including extra service fees or commissions when selling foreign currency.
This practice has discouraged customers from purchasing foreign currency through official banking channels.
To encourage people to buy foreign currency legally, the central bank has, for the first time, fixed a standard passport endorsement fee.
