Prime Minister Tarique Rahman is set to visit Jashore on April 27 to inaugurate the re-excavation of the Ulasi–Jadunathpur canal in Sharsha upazila.

During the daylong visit, he is also scheduled to take part in several development activities, including laying the foundation stone of a 500-bed Jashore Medical College Hospital.

According to officials, the prime minister will arrive in Jashore in the morning, attend the canal project inauguration, and later address a public rally at Eidgah Maidan before returning to Dhaka in the evening.

Local leaders said preparations are underway to ensure smooth arrangements for the visit, which has generated enthusiasm among residents and political activists.

The canal project carries historical importance as it is linked to an initiative launched by former president Ziaur Rahman in 1976, widely known as the “Ulasi Model.”

The initiative promoted community-based development through voluntary labour, helping improve irrigation and agriculture in the area.

Over time, the canal became silted and lost functionality, prompting renewed demands for restoration.

Officials said the re-excavation is expected to reduce waterlogging and revive irrigation and fisheries potential in the region.

Authorities believe the project, along with planned infrastructure development, will contribute to strengthening the local economy and improving livelihoods.
