Prioritize public welfare over profit: Chief Adviser Dr. Yunus urges business leaders

Chief Adviser Dr. Muhammad Yunus has urged business owners to focus on the welfare of the people rather than just their personal gains. 

He made this important call during the inauguration of the National Social Welfare Day 2025 event, which took place on Thursday (January 2) at Manik Mia Avenue, Dhaka. 

The event, organized by the Department of Social Services, included a Walkathon and Social Welfare Conference.

Dr. Yunus stressed the need for social businesses to tackle the nation‍‍`s pressing issues. 

He highlighted that if more businesses focused on public welfare, many of the country‍‍`s problems could be solved. 

"By addressing critical sectors through social business, we can significantly resolve issues," he said, urging every citizen to take part in this movement.

He also pointed out the importance of preparing the younger generation to be responsible citizens, which he believes is crucial for the future of the country.

Speaking about social welfare, he reminded everyone that it is the responsibility of each individual, while the role of the ministry is to make sure people don’t forget or shy away from this duty. 

"This day is observed to remind everyone of their responsibilities to society," he said, expressing hope that the message would reach everyone.

Dr. Yunus also touched on the natural human tendency to help others. He mentioned that people often find more joy in working for the benefit of others than in working solely for themselves. 

He encouraged people to make helping others a habit in their daily lives. 

"There is more joy in working for the welfare of others than doing something only for yourself," he noted.

He also pointed out that the power of people is stronger than that of the government. 

He called on everyone to take personal action to move the country forward, instead of relying solely on the government. 

"The strength of the people is greater than the strength of the government," he said, urging individuals to step up for the betterment of society.

Earlier in the day, Dr. Yunus officially inaugurated the Walking Marathon to kick off the event.
