Ramna Batamul blast death-row convict Mufti Shafiqur held

Rapid Action Battalion members have arrested Mufti Shafiqur Rahman, a death-row convict in the bomb blasts during Pahela Baishakh celebrations at Ramna Batamul in 2001.

A team of Rab captured him from Bhairab area in Kishoreganj on Thursday exactly the same day 21 years ago the blast occurred.

ANM Emran Khan, assistant director of Rab's Legal and Media wing, confirmed the news.

Rab will hold a press conference in this regard on Friday.

Ten people were killed and dozens injured after two bombs went off 21 years ago on this day during the celebrations of Bangla New Year, 1408 (on April 14, 2001) at Ramna Batamul.

Later in 2014, a Dhaka court handed down death penalty to eight militants of Harkatul Jihad al Islami Bangladesh (Huji-B), including Mufti Shafiqur and its top leader Mufti Abdul Hannan.

Mufti Shafiqur was also handed down life imprisonment in a case filed following the 21 August grenade attack on a rally of the then opposition Awami League at Bangabandhu Avenue in Dhaka in 2004.
