Awami League General Secretary Obaidul Quader has urged leaders and workers of the party to remain vigilant against any attempt to disrupt celebration of Durga Puja.
He made the call at a meeting with the puja celebration committee and Sanatan religious leaders at the political office of the Awami League president in Dhanmondi on Friday.
He said: "Awami League is determined to build a non-communal Bangladesh. So, all should remain careful about ensuring the security of people during religious festival."
Earlier on Thursday, Dhaka Metropolitan Police commissioner Shafiqul Islam said there have been risks of extremist attacks during Durga Puja as some 50 youths, suspected to be involved in extremist activities, went missing from their families recently.
Law enforcers and intelligence agencies have been working to trace them and their training places, he added.
There are 242 puja mandaps in the capital and five of those are biggest and major mandaps, said DMP officials.
The police commissioner said that the police and the Ansars personnel would be deployed round the clock at the all the puja mandaps in the capital.
The police also asked people not to carry bags while visiting mandaps.
There was violence in different districts during Durga Puja in the past year.
