Secretariat employees submit memorandum, warn of protest after Eid

Employees from various ministries and divisions in the Bangladesh Secretariat submitted memorandums on Monday to two advisers of the interim government, demanding the immediate repeal of the ‘Public Service (Amendment) Ordinance, 2025.’

The employees have warned of tougher protests across the country following Eid-ul-Azha if their demand is not met.

Prior to submitting the memorandums, the aggrieved employees held a protest rally at the Secretariat’s Badamtala area.

Leaders from the Bangladesh Secretariat Officers and Employees Unity Forum, which is spearheading the movement, declared that they would expand the protests beyond the Secretariat and mobilize government workers across the nation.

The memorandums were submitted to the offices of Asif Mahmud Sajib Bhuiyan, Adviser for Local Government, Rural Development and Cooperatives and Youth and Sports, and Mahfuz Alam, Adviser for the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting. However, both advisers were not present in their offices at the time.

On Tuesday, the employees plan to deliver memorandums to the Finance Adviser, Dr. Salehuddin Ahmed, and the Law Adviser, Dr. Asif Nazrul.

Previously, they submitted similar appeals to the advisers of the ministries of Power, Energy and Mineral Resources, Road Transport and Bridges, Railways, Food, Land, Environment, Forest and Climate Change, and Water Resources.

Unity Forum Co-Chairman Badiul Kabir stated that government employees across all offices and service institutions are outraged by what they call a repressive ordinance.

He warned that misinterpreting their peaceful approach as weakness would be a grave mistake.

The employees’ protests, which began over a week ago, include rallies, work stoppages, and continuous pressure to repeal the ordinance, which was enacted during the ongoing demonstrations.
