Secretariat employees to submit memorandums, suspend work stoppage

Protesting employees at the Secretariat have announced that instead of holding one-hour work stoppages, they will submit memorandums to five advisors of the interim government over two days. This decision is part of their continued opposition to the ‘Public Service (Amendment) Ordinance, 2025.’

On Sunday, memorandums will be handed over to three advisors—Ali Imam Majumder, Fauzul Kabir Khan, and Syeda Rizwana Hasan. On Monday, two other advisors—Asif Mahmud Sajib Bhuiyan and Mahfuz Alam—will receive memorandums. Additionally, memorandums will be delivered at the field level through the heads of various agencies and institutions.

The announcement was made following a previously scheduled one-hour work stoppage observed on Thursday from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM.

At a press briefing held at the Secretariat Central Library, leaders of the Secretariat Officers and Employees Oikya Forum, including Co-Chairmen Badiul Kabir and Muhammad Nurul Islam and Co-Secretary General Nazrul Islam, outlined their next steps.

Although the forum had earlier declared daily one-hour work stoppages until their demands were met, they confirmed that there will be no such stoppages on Sunday and Monday. Instead, the focus will shift to submitting memorandums to press for the withdrawal of the ordinance.

The protest began following the interim government’s advisory council meeting last Thursday, where the draft of the ordinance amending the Government Service Act, 2018 was approved. The ordinance was officially issued on Sunday evening, prompting ongoing demonstrations from Secretariat employees.

Leaders of the Oikya Forum expressed hope for a resolution upon the return of Chief Advisor Professor Muhammad Yunus, who is currently visiting Japan. They are optimistic that positive developments will follow and that they will be able to celebrate Eid-ul-Azha with a favorable outcome.
