After being missing for a week, the dismembered body of Member of Parliament Anwarul Azim has been discovered. Kolkata police have reported that a taxi driver in custody confessed to the crime.
The arrested taxi driver admitted to killing the passenger and dismembering the body on May 13, according to Bidhannagar Police Deputy Commissioner Manab Singla, speaking to BBC Bangla. The motive behind the murder is still unclear.
Bangladesh`s Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal stated that MP Anwarul Azim was deliberately killed in Kolkata’s New Town area.
"The motive for the murder is still unknown. Indian police cannot disclose more details at this stage due to the ongoing investigation," said Asaduzzaman Khan in a press briefing at his Dhanmondi residence on Wednesday.
CCTV footage shows that Azim was taken to a flat in Sanjiva Town, New Town, Kolkata. Police have sealed off the flat and restricted access. According to a police source cited by BBC Bangla, the footage shows three individuals, including a woman, entering the flat, but none were seen exiting. It is suspected that MP Azim`s body might be inside the flat.
Meanwhile, MP Anwarul Azim`s daughter, Mumtazarin Ferdous Doreen, has arrived at the scene in Kolkata, confirmed by the Bangladeshi High Commission in Kolkata.
On May 19, Doreen visited the Detective Branch office in Dhaka and said, "I haven`t been able to contact my father for three days. Sometimes his phone is on, and sometimes it`s off. I reached out to the head of the Detective Branch, who assured me he is looking into the matter. The main reason I came to the DB office is that I couldn`t reach my father."
Earlier, on May 12, MP Azim crossed the Darshana-Gede border into India at 2:40 PM. That evening, he reached the house of Gopal Biswas, a gold trader in Mondalpara Lane, Barrackpore Commissionerate, Kolkata. The next day, around 1:40 PM, Gopal Biswas’s acquaintance, Subhajit Manna, saw Azim getting into a car in front of Bidhannagar Public School. Later that night, MP Azim sent a message to Gopal Biswas`s WhatsApp, stating he wouldn`t be returning that night as he was going to Delhi, and requested not to be called, assuring he would call once he reached Delhi.
