Fire broke out at eight cotton warehouses in Tongi, Gazipur this afternoon.
Three fire engines rushed to the cotton godowns in Tongi Millgate area around 3:20pm to bring the fire under control according to Ariful Islam, duty officer of Tongi Fire Service and Civil Defence.
According to witnesses, an electrical transformer exploded around 3:15pm, causing some surrounding warehouses to catch fire. The fire spread rapidly, and the products and machinery in eight cotton warehouses burned down.
Locals initially tried to put out the fire using the firefighting equipment of a garment factory next to the warehouse.
The fire burned eight cotton warehouses, four of which were owned by Saidul Islam, two by Milon Mia, one by Zahirul Islam, and one by Jahangir Alam.
Two tea shops of Mamun and Kamal were also burnt.
According to Abu Sajedul Kabir Joardar, Senior Officer of the Tongi Fire Service, the fire is suspected to have started due to an electrical short circuit.
There were no casualties reported.
He said that the extent of damage will be known after an investigation.
