Iqbal Hasan Mahmud Tuku, a senior leader of Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), has raised serious concerns about the future of the country’s economy, especially after 2027.

He warned that the country could face a major foreign currency crisis due to corruption and mismanagement in the electricity sector.

Tuku made these statements during a press briefing at BNP’s Chairperson’s office in Gulshan on Thursday, January 2.

He criticized the ruling Awami League for creating a mess in the country’s power sector, saying, “The Awami League has bankrupted the people of Bangladesh while trying to fix the electricity sector. After 2027, the country will face a terrible foreign exchange crisis, and the main reason will be the electricity sector.”

Tuku went on to accuse the government of intentionally creating an artificial shortage of electricity and fuel to engage in corrupt practices.

He explained, “The Awami League has embezzled a huge amount of money—about 1 lakh crore taka—under the pretext of ‘capacity charges.’ They turned the electricity sector into a money-making business. They figured out that they could make quick profits without any accountability.”

Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, BNP’s Secretary-General, also spoke at the press conference. He emphasized how corruption within the ruling party often goes unnoticed in political discussions.

He said, “In political debates, the corruption, looting, and mismanagement of the Awami League are ignored. If we don’t talk about how they have ruined the country, people will forget it.”

Fakhrul assured the public that if BNP comes to power, they will review all sectors, including electricity, and take necessary actions.

The press briefing was organized to shed light on the issues of corruption and mismanagement in the power sector, with key BNP leaders, including Tuku, Fakhrul, and Nazrul Islam Khan, present to voice their concerns.
