One person has been killed in firing at a vote centre in Kutubjom union of Maheshkhali in Cox’s Bazar leaving four more injured. Voting was suspended at the centre following the gunfire.
The deceased was identified as Abul Kalam (40) who was a supporter of independent and Awami League rebel candidate Mosharraf Hossain Khokon.
The incident took place around 10:45am on Monday (September 20). Officer in Charge, Md. Abdul Hye of Maheshkhali police station confirmed the matter to TheReport.live.
Supporters of Awami League candidate Sheikh Kamal and rebel Mosharraf Hossain Khokon locked into altercation over vote rigging which led the gunfire, Abdul Hye said.
Five people including Abul Kalam sustained bullet injury during the incident. All of them were taken to Cox’s Bazar Sadar hospital where doctor declared Abul Kalam dead.
Meanwhile, one more person was also killed in a separate violence at Boroghop union of Kutubdia upazila in the district, police said.
Earlier on the day, voting started at 160 postponed union parishads and nine municipalities at 8am and will continue till 4 pm.
Out of 160 UPs chairmen were elected unopposed at 44 while casting ballots is underway for rest of the posts.
