Five people have died after an explosion at a South Korean aerospace manufacturing facility, authorities said on Monday, as investigators worked to determine what caused the blast.

The accident took place at a plant operated by Hanwha Aerospace in the city of Daejeon, about 150 kilometres south of Seoul. Two other people were injured.

Emergency services received reports of a loud explosion and thick smoke rising from the site shortly before 11 a.m. local time. Fire officials said around 30 calls were made by nearby residents.

A level-1 emergency response was activated, and firefighters brought the fire under control within about 30 minutes.

Authorities believe the explosion occurred on the first floor of the facility, but the exact cause remains unknown.

The plant has experienced similar accidents in the past. Explosions involving rocket propellants at the facility in 2018 and 2019 left several people dead or injured.

Police and fire officials have launched an investigation to find out what triggered the latest blast.
