Hamas has announced it will release Israeli-American hostage Edan Alexander in a move aimed at advancing ceasefire talks and allowing humanitarian aid into Gaza, which has been under Israeli blockade for 70 days.

Alexander, 21, was captured during Hamas’s October 7 attack while serving in an elite Israeli infantry unit.

He is believed to be the last living US national among the hostages held in Gaza. Of the 251 hostages taken, 59 remain, with up to 24 thought to be alive.

The release is expected ahead of President Donald Trump’s visit to the Middle East on Tuesday.

Trump confirmed the news on Truth Social, calling it “monumental” and a “good faith step.”

Alexander’s family expressed deep gratitude to Trump and US officials, calling it “the greatest gift imaginable.”

A senior Palestinian source told the BBC that talks with US representatives in Qatar were ongoing, with another meeting scheduled to finalize the release.

A temporary halt to Israeli military operations is expected during the handover.

Israel, however, has not committed to a full ceasefire, only agreeing to a safe corridor for Alexander’s release.

Prime Minister Netanyahu’s office said the move came as a result of military pressure and reiterated that Israel would continue its operations until all war objectives are met.

Egypt and Qatar welcomed Hamas’s decision as a positive step towards renewed negotiations.

The war, triggered by Hamas‍‍`s October 7 assault that killed 1,200 Israelis, has led to Israel’s extensive military campaign in Gaza.

According to the Hamas-run health ministry, 52,829 Palestinians have been killed.

Aid agencies warn of starvation and rising malnutrition, with over 10,000 children affected and food prices soaring by up to 1,400%.
