Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi shared his views on India’s relationship with the United States in a post on social media platform X on Saturday. Modi described the ties between the two countries as “still very positive.”
In his post, Modi expressed gratitude for US President Donald Trump’s supportive remarks regarding their personal relationship and reciprocated the sentiment. He further highlighted that India and the US share a highly positive, forward-looking, and comprehensive global strategic partnership.
The comments come shortly after Trump reiterated his personal friendship with Modi, amid ongoing tensions in India-US relations. Washington recently imposed tariffs of up to 50 percent on certain Indian goods, citing concerns that India’s purchase of Russian oil could indirectly support Moscow’s military actions in Ukraine.
Despite these tensions, Modi and Trump have maintained a close rapport since Trump’s first term, both known for their populist leadership styles. Earlier, Trump told reporters that he would always remain a friend of Modi and reassured that the special relationship between India and the US remains strong, even after earlier criticism regarding India’s ties with China.
Last week, Modi traveled to China to attend the Shanghai Cooperation Organization summit, marking his first visit to the country in seven years. The trip suggested a potential warming of ties between the two Asian powers. However, the visit reportedly irritated Trump, who seeks credit for peace efforts between India and Pakistan following decades of conflict. Modi described these peace initiatives as diplomacy worthy of Nobel recognition.
Meanwhile, India has rejected any third-party mediation on the Kashmir issue, a stance that has reportedly frustrated the US president.
