Bangladesh has officially entered the 5G era, as leading mobile operators Robi and Grameenphone launched fifth-generation mobile services on Monday.
After years of preparation, the rollout marks a major milestone in the country’s digital transformation.
Initially introduced in select areas on a trial basis, the 5G network is expected to expand nationwide in the coming years.
Beyond faster internet speeds, experts say the technology could bring breakthroughs in healthcare, education, industrial automation, and the development of smart cities.
The fifth generation of mobile technology, or 5G, offers ultra-fast data transfer, lower latency, and the ability to connect millions of devices simultaneously.
It has applications far beyond phone calls and browsing—enabling autonomous vehicles, remote surgery, the Internet of Things (IoT), as well as augmented and virtual reality.
Compared with 4G, 5G promises speeds up to 20 gigabits per second for downloads and 10 Gbps for uploads, while reducing latency to as low as one millisecond.
Such improvements are expected to revolutionize cloud gaming, high-definition video streaming, real-time robotics, and industrial systems.
Officials said the network will also support smart city infrastructure, traffic management, waste control, and improved public safety.
With the capacity to connect up to one million devices per square kilometer, the rollout is seen as a key step toward building a “Digital Bangladesh.”
