OpenAI has announced plans to acquire Astral, a leading developer of Python-based tools, as it looks to expand its capabilities in AI-assisted coding.
The deal, disclosed on Thursday, will see Astral’s developer-focused tools integrated into OpenAI’s coding platform Codex.
Financial terms of the acquisition were not made public.
Codex, launched last year, has seen rapid growth, reaching more than 2 million weekly active users.
According to OpenAI, the platform’s user base has tripled and overall usage has increased fivefold since the beginning of the year.
Astral is widely known within the Python community for building tools that improve development speed and reliability.
Its CEO, Charlie Marsh, said the company’s open-source projects will continue to be supported following the acquisition.
The move comes as competition intensifies in the AI coding space, with growing adoption of Anthropic’s Claude Code among developers.
OpenAI has been expanding its developer ecosystem in recent months, including the launch of a desktop application aimed at making its coding tools more accessible and efficient for users.
