Former Speaker Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury has been detained by the Detective Branch of Dhaka Metropolitan Police from her residence in Dhanmondi early Tuesday.

Deputy Commissioner (Media) NM Nasiruddin confirmed that she was taken into custody in the morning.

Police officials said it is yet to be decided under which case she will be formally shown arrested. However, she is reportedly accused in multiple cases filed at different police stations.

Authorities added that further details about the cases and legal process will be disclosed later.

Shirin Sharmin stepped down from her position on September 2, 2024, shortly after the fall of the government led by Sheikh Hasina.

She was first elected Speaker in April 2013 after previously serving as a Member of Parliament from Rangpur-6.

Officials said legal proceedings will move forward once the relevant cases are finalised.
