Long-term use of chemical-based toothpaste may not only harm the gums but is also suspected of causing oral ulcers and even serious diseases such as cancer. As a result, many people are now turning to homemade toothpaste as an alternative to commercially available products.
A recent study by ESDO found that 26 out of 34 toothpaste brands sold in the country contained toxic microplastics. Following the findings, concerns over the ingredients used in commercially available toothpaste have resurfaced.
As an alternative to market-bought toothpaste, toothpaste can also be made at home using natural ingredients. Here is how you can make it.
Ingredients needed to make toothpaste:
- Baking soda: 4 tablespoons
- Coconut oil: 2 tablespoons
- Peppermint oil: 10–15 drops
- Salt: A pinch
How to make it:
- First, mix baking soda and salt thoroughly in a small bowl.
- Add coconut oil and mix well.
- Once the mixture is combined, add a few drops of peppermint oil.
- If the mixture is not thick enough to form a paste, add a little more baking soda.
- Store the paste in a glass container and keep it in the refrigerator. Use this mixture to brush your teeth twice a day.
